ViennaUP 2026 is officially behind us — and what a week it was. As part of Europe's largest decentralised startup festival, the Helios team spent five intense days in Austria connecting with founders, investors, and industrial leaders shaping the future of the European cleantech ecosystem.

A Packed Week Across Vienna's Startup Ecosystem
From the Opening Night that brought the entire startup community together, to Connect Day where we met fellow founders from across the continent, every day brought a new perspective on what it takes to scale internationally. Impact Days at Vienna's Rathaus framed the bigger picture — how capital, governance, and innovation come together to support businesses that aim to regenerate rather than extract. Manufacturing Day, organised by EIT Manufacturing East with over 500 participants from 50+ countries, focused on the question every hardware founder eventually faces: how do you move from pilot to industrial scale? The Road to Global Tech Summit at WKÖ brought together founders, investors, and business builders going global — exactly the conversations Helios needs as we step into the DACH region. KPMG's Funded Founder Summit and Lab to Leader added the operational layers: financing, governance, and the leadership transition from research-driven team to scaled industrial company.

Three Key Takeaways for European Cleantech
A few themes kept resurfacing across the week:
Industrial Scale Is the New Bottleneck
Europe has the science. The challenge is now manufacturing capacity, capital efficiency, and regulatory navigation. Cleantech startups with strong R&D fundamentals are increasingly stalling at the pilot-to-industrial-scale transition — exactly the gap Helios is built to close.
DACH Is Moving Fast on Decarbonization
CBAM, EU ETS, and national green deals are reshaping the procurement decisions of cement, steel, and chemical producers across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The carbon capture conversation is no longer "if" — it's "with whom, and how fast."
Cleantech Is No Longer a Niche Track
Across every event, climate technologies were central to capital allocation, policy, and corporate strategy. Funds that previously segmented climate as a side bucket are now placing it at the core of their thesis.

What This Means for Helios
For us, ViennaUP 2026 was more than a festival. It was a clear signal that our MOF-based solutions for industrial decarbonization and water technologies are entering the right conversations at the right time. The European cleantech ecosystem is ready for scalable carbon capture solutions — and Helios is positioned to deliver them. We left Vienna with new partners, sharper conviction, and a clearer roadmap into Europe. Onwards.
