HKUST-1 (Cu-BTC)

HKUST-1 is a copper-based MOF formed by the coordination of Cu²⁺ ions with benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (BTC) linkers. It is well known for its large surface area and metal active sites which contributes to its high adsorption capacity for small gases . The material typically appears as a blue crystalline powder.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about HKUST-1 (Cu-BTC). Can't find yours? Contact us

How do I activate HKUST-1 before use?

Typically by heating under vacuum at around 150 °C for several hours (overnight is common) to remove water and solvent from the pores. Use the conditions on the TDS for exact values.

What colour should HKUST-1 be?

As received it is a blue powder. After activation it turns dark blue to purple as water leaves the copper sites. If it turns light blue again, it has taken up moisture and should be re-activated.

Is HKUST-1 sensitive to moisture?

Yes. Activated HKUST-1 adsorbs water from air, and long exposure to humidity can damage the framework. Keep it sealed and dry, ideally under inert gas, and re-activate before measurements.

What is HKUST-1 typically used for?

CO₂ and small-gas adsorption studies, gas separation, Lewis-acid catalysis, and as a well-characterised reference material when comparing new adsorbents.

Can I order HKUST-1 (Cu-BTC) in larger quantities?

Packages up to 100 g can be ordered online. For larger or industrial quantities, contact us for a quote – we supply everything from gram-scale research samples to industrial batches.

Are SDS and TDS documents available for HKUST-1 (Cu-BTC)?

Yes. The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and Technical Data Sheet (TDS) can be downloaded from this page.

Can you synthesize a custom MOF for my application?

Yes. Tell us your target gas or application, the required particle size and quantity, and our R&D team will get back to you about custom synthesis.
